Language Apps

Below are free interactive language learning apps that can be set up on your smartphone or tablet.


  • Anki - Free flashcard software.
  • Clozemaster - Language learning app styled after an 80s arcade game. Learn vocabulary in the context of short sentences. 
  • Duolingo - Popular, immersive game-like platform. 
  • Mango Languages -  Available through the Columbus Metropolitan Library. *Columbus Metropolitan Library card required*
  • Memrise - For increasing your vocabulary. Not yet available in Arabic or Latin.
  • Simply Learn Languages - Simple app available in over 50 languages with accompanying indexes and social media accounts. 

Online Resources

  • 2lingual is a bilingual search engine that allows you to complete Google searches in two languages simultaneously
  • Project Gutenberg has an extensive collection of books in various languages. 
  • Readlang is a Chrome extension that allows users to translate words and phrases while using websites in their target language.

Dictionaries

  • Lexicool has dictionaries for over 70 languages, plus special glossaries for specific subjects like engineering or medicine. 
  • Omniglot hosts an extensive collection of living and extinct languages and writing systems.
  • Lexilogos is another collection of dictionaries, keyboards, and additional resources. The site has a straightforward design, just be sure the page is set to your preferred language in the top right before browsing. They also have maps!
