SOME ANSWERS IF YOU HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT YOUR IDENTITY…
AM I THE BIOLOGICAL CHILD OF MY PARENTS?
For all of us who work with Grandmothers, any doubt about your origin is enough reason to start the process. It doesn’t matter if your doubt is based on concrete facts or in sensations: we can help you when the doubts take over.
WHAT CAN I DO IF I HAVE DOUBTS?
A group of young people assists Abuelas with these consultations. If you want to contact us, complete the form in the Web Page of Grandmothers where you can express your doubts.
In Argentina, you can also contact us using the phone numbers of any of our branches. Walk-ins are welcome. It is advisable to make a personal appointment to make sure we can answer all your questions.
If you are outside Argentina, on the other hand, you can communicate with the Red Argentina por el Derecho a la Identidad – Canada/USA abroad.
IF I CONTACT THE ABUELAS, DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE DNA TEST?
Contacting us doesn’t mean you must take the DNA test. You can come to us, talk, ask your questions without the need to start any process. That is to say, we are a space for conversation to help you to think about your doubts and your fears. Only when you have all the information needed about the procedure, you will decide how you want to continue. You won’t have to do or say anything that you do not want.
DO I NEED TO TRAVEL TO ARGENTINA TO TAKE THE DNA TEST?
No. A test kit will be sent to those qualifying for a DNA test. Protocols are in place for extraction and delivery of the sample via Argentinean diplomatic channels to ensure that the sample arrives safely to Argentina for verification.
If you live in North America, the Red Argentina por el Derecho a la Identidad – Canada/USA will assist you and accompany you through any or all stages of your search.
National Bank of Genetic Data
It is a systematic archive of genetic material and biological samples belonging to family members of persons kidnapped and disappeared by the Argentine military dictatorship. Their goal is to guarantee the gathering, storage and analysis of the genetic information needed as proof to solve crimes against humanity.
This Bank makes it possible the search and identification of the children of disappeared people kidnapped with their parents or born during the captivity of their mothers as well as to assist justice or governmental and non-governmental organizations in the genetic identification of the remains of victims of forced disappearance.
WHO WILL KNOW ABOUT MY INDENTITY INQUIRY?
This search is absolutely confidential and the information we gather during this investigation is reserved. Your doubts will never get to be known by anyone beyond us.
DO I NEED TO BE ON TV IF I AM THE CHILD OF A DISAPPEARED PERSON?
When the grandmothers are successful and the identity of any of their grandchildren is restituted, they make a press release to share the happiness of the reunion with the public at large. Nevertheless, the press release only gives information about the biological family; about the disappeared parents of the young adult that grew up without knowing his or her story. No information about the name he/she grew up with is released, so there is no way their current family or acquaintances can identify them or be identified.
Network for the Right to Identity
The Network for Identity is currently in 40 cities and it is formed by governmental and non-governmental organizations, institutes and civil organizations, professionals and all those people who volunteer to help with the mission of Grandmothers to find their grandchildren and to defend the right to identity that even today is being violated.
In Argentina, you can contact the Network branch near to your home at https://abuelas.org.ar/nodo (Spanish).
