English Department Writing Repository: English Department

Supplemental Materials for Columbus State's Composition Courses

Overview

English Department

The English Department tab includes texts to inform faculty of department-specific procedures. It also includes documents provided by the department for use in and/or assistance with teaching Composition. If interested in using any of the sources intended for the students provided in the Writing Repository, please download documents, make indicated changes, and add them to your Blackboard course shells. Students should not be given direct access to this instructor-facing Lib Guide. Thank you.

Syllabi

These are the standard Composition syllabi for the English Department. Provided here are the most current versions. When uploading syllabi to your computer or Blackboard course shell, be aware of the date attached to the name of the document. This can help you ensure that you have the most up-to-date copy. Please note that there are blank spaces on each syllabus for you to fill in (name, email address, etc.), as well as instructions for you in yellow boxes to follow and delete before sharing with your students.

ENGL 1100/1101 Rubrics

The English Department is exploring new forms of assessment options to incorporate into our Composition courses. If you have an idea to propose or pilot in a class, contact the Chairperson and/or Lead Instructor. Until options have been voted in by full-time faculty, here are three versions of the rubric to utilize for grading the major writing projects in ENGL 1100. In addition is a draft guide or template instructors may use to help them build the Assignment Guidelines for each of their major Writing Projects, as well as to explain the criteria for success in the department rubrics.

Department Course Shells

We do not have required textbooks for our Composition I and II courses, but we do recommend using the free digital textbook, You Matter: Supporting Our Community through Reading, Writing, and More Success Strategies, as it was written specifically with our students in mind. We also recommend the Composition Reading Bank for finding readings to use in your classes. If you choose to utilize other supplemental sources with your students, note that they cannot have a cost attached to them, nor should copious amounts of paper be used to print/copy them. Provide digital copies via Blackboard. Additional materials to assist you with the teaching of our students can also be found in the English Department Writing Repository and tutoring for reading and writing for your students, both in and out of the classroom, is available through our Writing Centers.

Blackboard course shells go live for students at least three business days before each semester begins. Please be sure to have content in them by the time they go live for students, so they know that the class is active and that you are ready for the semester to start.

Columbus State’s Digital Education and Instructional Services (DEIS) handles many requests for course copies as semesters are getting started. The sooner course copy requests can be made, the better. However, you should strive to know what is being copied into your assigned course shell(s) before making your request. If you would like to review any of the English Department Blackboard course shells before requesting they be copied, feel free to contact the Course Developers below for the shell you are interested in. They will be able to temporarily add you as a student to their shell, allowing you to take a look in advance. (Please note that full-time faculty is on break in between terms, so they may not respond to emails as promptly during this time.)

Once you know what content you would like copied into the course shells you are assigned to teach, please read the instructions here:

If you need an empty Blackboard course shell created in order to develop new content, please contact Joan Petrusky (jpetrusk@cscc.edu) and/or Michael Keller (mkeller27@cscc.edu) to discuss this. Thank you.
