In 2023, the first egg of the season was laid on April 23rd and the last fledging to leave the nest boxes vacated on July 29th. Both of these were Eastern Bluebirds. Over the season, there were 3 Tree Swallow nests and 6 Eastern Bluebird nests in total. Bluebirds often have two broods in one nesting season. The Tree Swallows had a 100% success rate, from nesting attempts to successful fledging, and the Eastern Bluebirds had a 60% success rate. Both of these success rates were above the average success rates in Ohio.
The benefits have not only been visible in the nesting birds and their new young, but also in Columbus State's students, faculty, and staff who have taken time out of their days to observe and appreciate the beautiful surrounding habitat around the Delaware campus. This project inspired people to engage more closely and more meaningfully with the campus and the natural biodiversity.
This map marks the locations of the 6 nest boxes located around Moeller Hall in 2023. In 2024, two additional nest boxes were added.
