The Columbus State community recently came together to celebrate the dedication and accomplishments of our first-generation students. On November 5th and 6th at the Columbus Campus, and on November 12th and 13th at the Delaware Campus, the college held a carnival-themed event with games, prizes, raffles, and free food! All students were welcome to participate in the fun—students who themselves are first-generation scholars, and students who have friends, classmates, and peers who proudly carry the title.
The library participated in the event by providing crafting materials for students to create personalized notebooks, bookmarks for students to color, raffle tickets, and lots and lots of candy! Students were able to take a break from their busy schedules to unwind with their friends and take home a fun memento from the day.
Up to half of the Columbus State student population identifies as first-generation; meaning that they are among the first in their family to attend college. If you are a first-generation student who may be brand new to writing research papers or want to discover resources that support your college success—we’ve got you covered! The Columbus State Library offers many resources to assist our first-generation students:
- Reference librarians can support you with one-on-one research appointments to help introduce you to the research process and creating citations.
- The library has a First-Generation Student Research Guide that contains books and articles that highlight first-generation students’ experiences, as well as resources on study skills, financial aid, time management, and more!
- Don’t forget about our partners in the library: Tutoring and the Writing Center. They can help with your writing assignments, as well as cover letters and resumes.
The library is here to support every student at any point in their college journey!
