Advertisements and Culture: Find Articles

Learn about analyzing and researching advertisements!

Research Databases

Research databases are wonderful tools for clarifying and supporting the finer points of your writing. They are best used in tandem with materials such as books or films, which help you build the general understanding of a topic you need in order to formulate an opinion and write comprehensively.

Columbus State Library provides access to hundreds of research databases.  A few that may be especially pertinent to researching and discussing advertisements are linked below.  If you are not on campus, you will be prompted to log in with your CSCC username and password.

Business Source Complete: focuses on trade publications and business news, including marketing and advertising.

SocIndex: articles from sociology-related journals--the study of culture and how individuals engage with culture.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection: focuses on the study of the individual's psyche, often noting intersections with cultural influences.

Communication & Mass Media Complete: index, abstracts, and full text for journals in communication and mass media.

The Database Doesn't Have Full Text for My Article. Now What?

During your search, you may encounter times when the full text (PDF or HTML) of an article is not available in the database.  Follow these steps to see how you may locate an electronic or print version of your article:

  1. If PDF and HTML full text are unavailable, click Full Text Finderin certain databases to locate print copies in Columbus State's library or electronic copies in another database, such as the Electronic Journal Center.
  2. If you know the name of the journal in which the article appears, search the eResource Lookup to see if the journal is available online in one of the research databases.
  3. If the article is not available at Columbus State's library or electronically through the research databases, search the OhioLINK catalog for print holdings at nearby college or university libraries.
