Women's History - United States: Althea Gibson

Introduction

The first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis as well as break racial barriers in professional golf, Althea Gibson was the first African-American tennis player to compete at the U.S. National Championships, to compete at Wimbledon, the first person of color to win a Grand Slam title, and the first African-American woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour.
